Kate Gakenheimer, Glass Artist
Kate Gakenheimer is a Cambridge-based artist specializing in stained glass. She studied art history with a focus in architecture at Boston University where she received her undergraduate degree in 1996. She then attended the North Bennet Street School where she studied preservation carpentry and received her diploma in 1998.
Kate began her arts career in 1998 at Daniel Maher Stained Glass in Somerville, Massachusetts. Since then she has graduated from apprentice to skilled artisan and designer. She has restored multiple Louis Comfort Tiffany and John LaFarge windows and has worked on the restoration of the Sara Wyman-Witman windows at the historic Trinity Church in Boston. At the studio, Kate has also worked on numerous new work commissions, including triple-hung foyer windows in the former home of Julia Child in Harvard Square.
Kate exhibits her own stained glass annually at the Somerville Open Studios at Daniel Maher Stained Glass and at the Cambridgeport Open Studios at her home studio. She is currently featuring her work at L’Attitude Gallery at 218 Newbury St. in Boston, at the Tristan Gallery at 148 Commercial St. in Provincetown, and at Left of Center STYLE in Minneapolis. She will also be an exhibitor at the annual Crafts at the Castle show at the Hines Convention Center in Boston December ’07.
Kate's work has also been exhibited in Massachusetts at the Nave Gallery in Somerville, at the Davis Square Windows Arts Project in Somerville, at Fresh Eggs in the South End, Boston, and at the Tufts University Art Gallery at the Aidekman Arts Center in Medford.
Her work has been featured in the Boston Globe Sunday Magazine and in the Boston Globe arts section.
